Scott #1138 4¢ United States Postage Stamp Commemorates Ephraim McDowell (1771-1830), a Pioneering American Physician & Surgeon.

All plate blocks are in MNH (Mint Never Hinged) condition. Four different plates were used when printing the stamps. The corresponding plate numbers are 26498, 26499, 26500, and 26501. If the plate number & position are not important when ordering, you can select 'Surprise me!'. Each separate plate block will come in a glassine envelope for protection.

  • SubjectEphraim McDowell (November 11, 1771 – June 25, 1830) was an American physician and trailblazing surgeon, celebrated as the “father of ovariotomy” and a pioneer of abdominal surgery. This stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary of his landmark 1809 operation—the first successful removal of an ovarian tumor without anesthesia—a revolutionary feat in medical history.
